Short answer
The decision rule
Specify filament by material grade, printer population, application and measurable incoming controls—not a category name alone. Use the same drying, profile, environment, test part and duration across samples, then record diameter method, ovality, mass, moisture, winding, packaging and lot change notifications.
01
Define the use case and printer population
A material that works in one tuned machine may create feeding, warping or surface problems across a mixed fleet. State printer models, nozzle sizes, temperatures, speed range, part function and environmental exposure before requesting samples.
For private-label or distribution programs, also define target customers, packaging language, shelf life and the claims that must be supported with evidence.
02
Specify measurable incoming quality
Diameter tolerance should be paired with measurement method, sampling plan and ovality expectation. Moisture, color consistency, spool winding, net mass and packaging seal are equally important to reliable feeding and finished appearance.
Agree how nonconforming lots are identified, retained, investigated and replaced. A concise incoming inspection plan protects both buyer and supplier.
03
Test samples like a production lot
Run sample material across representative machines and jobs, not only a small decorative model. Record drying, profile, environment, yield, stringing, warping, layer bonding and any nozzle wear.
- Use a defined test file and profile
- Measure functional features where relevant
- Run more than one spool
- Include long-duration production jobs
- Document changes made to obtain a good result
04
Plan packaging and logistics
Moisture barrier, desiccant, spool protection, carton strength and pallet pattern affect arrival quality. Confirm labeling, barcodes, lot code, country-of-origin marking and private-label artwork before production.
Compare delivered usability across shipment size, destination handling, storage exposure and damage risk. A headline unit comparison does not offset unusable or inconsistent material.
05
Create a recurring-lot control loop
Keep an approved reference sample and record feedback by lot. Share forecast changes early, review quality trends and require notification before raw material, pigment, formulation, packaging or production-location changes.
A reliable bulk program depends on controlled recurring lots. Volume bands can matter, but consistency, change control and responsive corrective action protect the buyer’s downstream reputation.
Working tool
Create an incoming-lot inspection record
Before sampling, agree the lot definition, number and selection of spools, test locations, conditioning, method, acceptance limits and action for a failed result. There is no universal sample size or acceptance limit implied by this worksheet. Use the material specification and your quality plan; a small convenience sample does not establish statistical lot acceptance.
| Check | Record and method to agree |
|---|---|
| Identity and packaging | Supplier grade, lot, label, spool count, bag/seal condition and visible transport damage. |
| Diameter and ovality | Calibrated instrument, spool ID and length location, two perpendicular readings at each location, limits and actual results. Define contact force to avoid deforming soft filament. |
| Water content | Sampling and sealing, conditioning, test method, units and result. Select an applicable method with the testing laboratory. |
| Net mass and feed fit | Gross/tare method, net mass, spool dimensions, winding condition and a defined feeding test. |
| Printed performance | Machine/profile, drying, test job, duration, observations and critical-part measurements. |
Working tool
Calculate yield and record the lot decision
Accepted yield = accepted parts / started parts. Teaching example: 190 accepted parts from 200 started parts gives 95% accepted yield. Record reprints, wasted filament and operator time separately; passing a diameter check does not prove that a lot prints acceptably across your fleet.
For a failed or missing result, identify and hold the affected stock, record evidence, notify the responsible supplier contact and obtain a disposition before use. Replacement, credit, retest and return terms must be agreed in the purchase documents. This worksheet is not a published EverBen return policy.
ISO 15512:2019 describes methods for determining water content in plastics. Ask the laboratory to select an applicable method for the material and target range. This standard concerns water content, not water-absorption behavior. The diameter measurements above are an editorial recording suggestion, not a claim of compliance with a filament product standard.
Keep an approved reference lot and require review of changes to formulation, pigment, manufacturing location, spool or packaging before substitution.
